rewire problems with ableton

Reported by rent | October 8th, 2009 @ 02:58 PM

I've got max to appear as a selection in ableton, but I'm still not getting any sound coming from mlrv. I've checked to make sure monitoring is on or auto and now it will turn on the DAC, but no lights start blinking on the monome as it normally does. also, now when I just try using mlrv normally routed through my coreaudio the loops won't run and the first light just stays lit with no noise.

I've already added the alias of the "MSPReWireDevice.bundle" to my 'Appilcation Support' file on my mac. that part of the problem seems to be solved but as I said, I'm still not getting any sound or conversation between the two programs.

-using max 5, ableton 7, and running on mac osx.

hey - your on windows yeah?

you need to install x-groove.mxe > search for x-sample (via maxobjects.com) and download the windows version.
i'm guessing this is the problem as i have seen it before (you probably have some error messages in the Max window)

let me know if this helps.

@rent - I see you've mentioned a couple of times in the monome forums that you're having trouble keeping the DAC on while ReWired in to Live. I think was having the same troubles:

    • the DAC wouldn't stay on
    • the top right button on the monome didn't flash, even if the audio was routed correctly through Live
    • I could change the tempo in mlrv, despite the tempo ostensibly being dictated by Live via ReWire

So far at least, I seem to have fixed all of this by increasing the the loop time in Live.

Because I wasn't "playing" any audio from Live - all my audio was being ReWired in from mlrV, I didn't see the point of having Live just playing for ever, so I created the smallest loop I could and hit play. That smallest loop was one beat.

Maybe galapagoose can confirm this, but I'm guessing that that one beat looped wasn't enough, in some way, for mlrV to get a handle on. Once I increased the loop in Live to a bar, the top right hand button on the monome lit up and started flashing as normal, the DAC stayed on, and the tempo in mlrV could not be altered.

I don't know if this applies to you, but I thought it might at least be worth a mention...

okay sorry for my tardiness in response to this...getting on this website seems like more work than figuring out mlrv.

@galapagoose - no, I'm on a macbook pro now running osx. I'm jumping over to it from my pc, so this is why you may remember me having used windows.

@scrag - thanks for noticing my cries for help man. much appreciated. you do sound like you were having similar issues as me, but I'm not sure it is entirely the same problem. I can never get the light to start flashing on the monome via rewire, even after altering every possible sound output, it still wont respond. I haven't messed with the play time at all really, so maybe I'll give that a shot and see if I can get any noise out of it.

sorry for jumping back and forth with these two different accounts but it seems the system can't remember my password and I have to get it emailed to me every time...

as far as this dilemma goes, I'm confident in saying I've tried everything within my knowledge and have done it all in every order possible with still no success. I have gotten past a few barriers though. I was able to get lights appearing while having everything rewired as it should be, but when I push one of the loop rows the buttons just stay and don't scroll across with any sound playing.

at this point I have to idea what else to do and I can't get the older modded versions of mlr I used to use on my pc to work the same on the mac. so my process has basically been halted and I'm actually really surprised it's been this much trouble getting the monome running as it did on my pc...I thought everything was better on a mac and the monome was the butter to its bread, but now I'm starting to think otherwise.

help is obviously appreciated and the sooner the better because I'm going through mlr withdrawals and I don't see any reason why this shouldn't be working like a charm...

    thanks

okay, seems like it's a problem with xgroove on my system. here are the results from the runtime window when I start the patch:

the problem was I didn't follow instructions before hand to install xgroove, which is definitely key. so problem solved. thanks!
